16 Years of Clara's Favorites 🎉

Inside: Discovery World, Oak Leaf Trail, Door County, Mequon Nature Preserve and more

Tomorrow, somehow, our oldest turns 16. It feels like just yesterday we were biking to the zoo, Clara and Xavier slumped together in the bike trailer, sound asleep.

It’s a reminder to make every childhood adventure count. Thankfully, she still makes Summer Bucket Lists, she still loves to bike with the family to Discovery World, she still hikes every summer in Door County.

In honor of the big day, this week's newsletter is dedicated to Clara's favorites, the ones she keeps coming back to, the ones that have shaped a whole childhood of weekends. These are Clara’s North Shore Family Adventures!

Know the North Shore: Mequon Nature Preserve

One of Clara’s favorite local hiking destinations! The preserve offers over 6 miles of trail loops that wind through diverse ecosystems including woodlands, wetlands, prairies, and open fields. I’ll never forget the time a giant frog leaped in front of us and scared us all! Learn more about Mequon Nature Preserve.

Biking to Discovery World

If there's one ride Clara has loved more than any other, it's the haul along the lakefront down to Discovery World. The route from the North Shore connects through the Oak Leaf Trail, dropping you right at the lakefront with views of the marina, the Hoan Bridge, and Lake Michigan opening up in front of you.

  • Discovery World is at 500 N Harbor Dr, right next to the Milwaukee Art Museum

  • Bike racks are plentiful at the lakefront, and the museum itself is incredibly bike-friendly

  • Reward yourself with the freshwater aquarium, the giant sturgeon tank, and the rooftop views of the harbor

For younger kids, the bike trailer years go faster than you think. For older kids, this is the kind of ride that turns into a whole-day memory.

Hiking in Door County

The second Clara classic: hiking in Door County. Two and a half hours up the highway and you're in a different world — bluffs, harbors, cherry orchards, and some of the best state park hiking in Wisconsin. Her go-to trails:

  • Peninsula State Park (Fish Creek) — the Eagle Trail along the bluffs, with views over Green Bay, plus the Eagle Tower observation deck

  • Newport State Park (Ellison Bay) — Wisconsin's only designated wilderness state park and a certified Dark Sky park, perfect if you stay overnight

  • Whitefish Dunes State Park (Sturgeon Bay) — sand dunes on Lake Michigan, with a trail that loops down to the beach

  • Cave Point County Park — right next to Whitefish Dunes, free, with the most dramatic limestone cliffs and wave-carved caves on the lake

Make a weekend of it: hike in the morning, Wild Tomato for dinner, and get photos at Sunset Beach!

Hanging Out at a Family Beer Garden

Milwaukee has built one of the best public beer garden cultures in the country, and most of them are absolutely kid-friendly with picnic tables, big lawns, open green space, and somebody always running a soccer ball around. A few of our family-favorites across the metro area:

  • Estabrook Park Beer Garden — the original public beer garden, right along the Milwaukee River, with shade trees and a playground nearby

  • Hubbard Park Lodge Beer Garden in Shorewood — smaller, cozier, and tucked into the woods along the river

  • South Shore Terrace in Bay View — the views of downtown across the lake at sunset are hard to beat

  • The Traveling Beer Gardens put on by Milwaukee County Parks — they rotate through parks all summer long, so you can hit a different one every weekend, including in Fox Point.

Pro tip: bring a frisbee, a deck of cards, and snacks. Kids find their own fun, parents get a slow afternoon, everyone wins.

More adventures!
