Almost summer
Inside: Outdoor concerts, beer gardens, pools, Memorial Day

My wife recently downloaded a bird identification app so she can figure out what’s singing in the trees. Not to be outdone, I downloaded a tree identifier app so I can finally stop saying, “That’s a nice-looking tree,” with no further details.
I’m not sure if this is a sure sign of spring, summer, middle age, or all of the above. But there’s something about this time of year that makes exploring even the most familiar parks, trails, backyards and neighborhood walks feel new again.
So whether you’re identifying birds, trees, playgrounds, food trucks or the best place to spread out a picnic blanket, there’s plenty to explore around the North Shore and greater Milwaukee this week.
Know the North Shore: Summer Soundtrack

Can you hear that? I can hear it — and it sounds like Pat McCurdy at Hubbard Park Lodge or the Whitefish Bay band at the ice cream social. Yes, we are on the cusp of summer outdoor music season, from Shorewood to Cedarburg and beyond.
From Jazz in the Park and Chill on the Hill to Live at the Oasis to BAYSHORE concerts to Summer Sounds and more, we rounded up free outdoor live music series happening across the North Shore and beyond in 2026. Grab your lawn chair and let’s go! 🎶
10K Steps Is a Myth–Try This Instead
When motivation is lacking, jumping into heavy routines is the fastest way to burn out. That’s why millions of people are turning to walking as the foundation of their fitness journey.
Walking lets you enjoy the outdoors, clear your head, and practice mindfulness. It’s simple, sustainable, and can support lasting weight loss if you know how much you need. The “10,000 steps a day” rule is outdated; everyone’s lifestyle is different.

🍺 Beer Garden Season has Arrived
It’s opening weekend for Fox Point Beer Garden, Bayside Beer Garden and Klode Park Beer Garden, featuring local craft brews from New Barons Brewing Coop and Torzala Brewing Company, food, music, and a relaxed community atmosphere. Non-alcoholic beverages will also be available. See our full guide to North Shore beer gardens.
Planning for Pool Season

Pool season is getting closer. Passes for the Mequon Community Pool officially went on sale this week, and families can purchase seasonal passes, super passes and nanny passe. The pool is scheduled to open for its first weekend on June 6–7 before reopening full-time for the season beginning June 11.
myCrew Night in Bayside

Bayside’s myCrew Night takes place TONIGHT on Tuesday, May 19, from 5-7pm at the Public Works building as part of National Public Works Week. Celebrate the 10th anniversary of the DPW building featuring equipment displays, a chance to operate a garbage truck, and unique photo opportunities with DPW vehicles. Enjoy engaging activities with prizes up for grabs and unleash your creativity with rock painting. Convenient parking is available in the south Village Hall parking lot.
Memorial Day

Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 25 this year, with observances and community events stretching across the weekend. Closer to the North Shore, watch for the Whitefish Bay ceremony at Armory Park, Shorewood’s community program on the lawn at Shorewood High School, the Mequon-Thiensville parade, and quiet self-guided stops like the Glendale War Memorial at Richard E. Maslowski Community Park. See the Memorial Day guide
