Know the North Shore: Glendale’s REM Park

Richard E. Maslowski (REM) Park update for 2026: Glendale’s new draft budget sets aside expenditures for new shade structures—hello cooler concert nights and happier playground breaks. Summer staples are also funded to return, including Independence Day fireworks, Live at the Oasis, and Maslowski Park events like Unplugged & Touch-A-Truck. Behind the scenes, the park runs on a mix of rentals, donations, a Nicolet High School contribution, and a modest city subsidy, which helps keep family nights free or low-cost.

North Shore History: ‘Mad Bombers’ Hit Shorewood

Halloween week 90 years ago brought real terror to Shorewood and Milwaukee. On October 26, 1935, two local teenagers—19-year-old Isador “Idzi” Rutkowski and 16-year-old Paul “Shrimp” Chovonec—detonated a homemade dynamite bomb outside the Shorewood Village Hall, blowing a hole in the building. In the tense days that followed, the duo (dubbed the “Mad Bombers”) escalated their spree: on Halloween night they even bombed two Milwaukee police stations, sowing panic across the city. The violent saga ended a few days later when the bombers accidentally blew themselves up amid their cache of explosives – a grim finale to one of the North Shore’s most frightening true crime stories.
