Welcome to May
Inside: Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Celebrating Spring

May is believed to be named for Maia, the Roman goddess of growth and nurturing. This feels about right for a month when everything suddenly starts blooming, opening and filling up the calendar. Around the North Shore, that means tacos and patios, Mother’s Day brunch, farm days, medallion hunts, markets, music, and Memorial Day weekend waiting at the end of the month.
Know the North Shore: Medallion Hunt

The Brown Deer Community Foundation’s Medallion Hunt returns Tuesday, May 12, with clues published every Tuesday and Friday until the medallion is found. This year’s grand prize is $2,500, thanks to an increased sponsorship from Café Corazón.
The medallion will once again be hidden somewhere in Brown Deer, and this year’s version has a Café Corazón-inspired look, featuring a skull in blue, red, yellow and orange. Clues will be published every Tuesday and Friday in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and on the Village of Brown Deer website until the medallion is found. Read the Brown Deer Medallion Hunt guide

Even better: the event is now free thanks to sponsorship from MKE Treasures. Read more about the Royal Tea Party
Celebrate Spring

Spring is in full swing at Barthel Fruit Farm in Mequon, and their annual Celebrate Spring Event is back May 15–17. Expect plants, a beer garden, grilled food, bakery treats, local makers, live music, face painting, crafts, rock painting and plenty of room for kids to wander. Friday focuses on the plant sale, beer garden, grilled food and bakery, while Saturday and Sunday add the artist and handmade market, kids activities and more. Plan your Barthel Fruit Farm visit
Memorial Day

Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 25 this year, with observances and community events stretching across the weekend. Closer to the North Shore, watch for the Whitefish Bay ceremony at Armory Park, Shorewood’s community program on the lawn at Shorewood High School, the Mequon-Thiensville parade, and quiet self-guided stops like the Glendale War Memorial at Richard E. Maslowski Community Park. See the Memorial Day guide
